OUR STORY
In the Spring of 1996 Gilberto “Gil” Saldivar Jr. approached Zaragosa “Mito” Espinoza with the idea of bringing another Latino Based Fraternity to the campus of Texas A&M University University. The idea was born out of the need to develop an organization where Latino men could unite under a common identity and stand unified. After several conversations about what their idea of an organization should include and sketching a vision of the future that would benefit the Latino community at Texas A&M University for generations to come, Gil and Mito began exploring the idea of creating a new organization or bringing an established organization to campus.

By the Summer of 1996 Miguel Gonzalez and Angel Piña, along with Gil and Mito felt that another organization on campus would allow a greater number of Latino men to reap the benefits of a Fraternal organization. Discussions would continue between the four men and others throughout the Summer of 1996. During that summer, Gil and Mito’s research intensified and information was sought from several different Latino Fraternities from across the nation. One night the two sat down and weighed the various aspects of each organization until they had narrowed the decision between two organizations. Along with input from Miguel and Angel, the group unanimously felt, that Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. was the most appropriate choice.
With the decision made, the foundations of a new chapter were laid, and the work began. The group contacted Angel Perez, a Brother from Eta Chapter, who informed the group that there were other individuals interested both at Texas A&M University and at the University of Texas at Austin as well. Brother Perez then instructed the group as to what requirements were needed to start an official Interest Group and begin the journey to Brotherhood.

The work toward completing the Interest Group requirements continued through the Spring of 1997. Along the way, many of the individuals that were originally interested were unable to continue for various reasons. Once the requirements were met, the group received word from the National Board of Lambda Theta Phi that both the Interest Group at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Interest Group at Texas A&M University were both approved to complete the process of induction during the Summer of 1997.

The Interest Group was officially capped at 5 men: Gilberto Saldivar Jr., Zaragosa “Mito” Espinoza, Miguel D. Gonzalez, Angel F. Piña, and Manuel Acevedo. The induction process was completed on July 27th, 1997 in Austin, Texas. The 5 men from the Interest Group at Texas A&M University became officially recognized as the Alpha Theta Chapter of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc., and Chad Ortiz and Alejandro Saldaña from The University of Texas at Austin became the Founding Brothers of the Alpha Eta Chapter of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. The journey to Brotherhood was complete, but as the Founding Brothers of the “Five Points of the Lone Star” would soon find out, the REAL work was just beginning. . .
